Leader Of Australian Goodwill Mission Has Been Reprimanded
Sydney, June 8 The Department of External Affairs has reprimanded the leader of the Australian Far East Goodwill Mission, W. MacMahon Bail, according to the Canberra representative of the "Sydney Telegraph,” who says that the department has reminded Mr. Ball that he left Australia with specific instructions to offer £500,000 worth of relief supplies, and education aid to the peoples of South-east Asia aad to arrange for Asiatic students to enrol at Australian universities or colleges. Mr. Ball is reported to have told the Malays that Australian opinion on the White Australia policy would change within ten years. The "Sydney Morning Herald” correspondent says Mr. Ball is criticised in official circles for going outside his province in discussing immigration with the leaders of the Malay, Chinese, and Indian communities. His reported statement that misunderstandings in Malaya over the White Australia policy were the result of individual administrative acts have been interpreted in some Government quarters as criticism of Mr. Calwell.
