JEFFERY SUCCUMBS TO SILK’S STEADY PLAY
(P.A.) Hamilton. June 8 Playing brilliant golf. B. M Silk, New Zealand amateur champion, defeated J. Jeffery (New Plymouth) 4 and 3 in the final of the North island championship today. Silk was 2 up at the end of the first 18 holes played during the morning. Losing touch in the middle stages of the morning round but finding his true form over the last few «oles. Jeffery put up a fine performance to be only 2 down. He was 4 down coming to the 13th. and picked up two holes, finishing the last three holes with two birdies and a bogey. Silk was playing steady golf. Continuing to play brilliant golf in the afternoon round. Silk reached the turn in 37. one under par. while Jeffers 7 negotiated the same holes in 39. With a little more luck in his putting, Jeffery would have made the game even more interesting, but Silk was the better player and actually the issue was never in doubt.
Beginning the last IS holes they both found a bunker at the 19th., which they halved in 4’s. Each was
on the green for two at the 20th. and they halved the hole in birdie 4’s. Two good seconds were played at the next hole and they were down in bogey 4’s. Jeffery s opportunity to reduce the lead at the 22nd was nullified when Silk stymied him and the hole was halved.
A splendid second bv Silk at the 23rd. won him the hole and placed him 3 up and at the next hol» both holed long putts. Silk tor a birdie 3 and Jeffery for 4. At the next three holes both played excellent seconds and they were down in bogey figures Silk found a bunker at the 28th. and Jeffery followed suit but the latter recovered and he recorded bogey figures to Silk’s one over to make it 3 up.
Silk’s second at the next hole hit the pin and gave him an easy putt I for a birdie 3. Jeffery taking 4 to be |4 down again. Silk made his first ;putting error at the next and Jeffery took the hole. However, Jeffery's second at the next found a bunker and Silk was 4 up again. The short 32nd. was halved m 3 s after Silk had played a magnificent approach shot after hooking his drive to th.' left of the green. At the last hole played, Jeffery hit his second out of bounds after a bad lie. Silk found a bunker but although he was short when he got out he stymied Jeffery and the hole was halved.
