TRADE WITH JAPAN HAS REOPENED

(N.Z. Public Relations Service). Tokio, June 3.

With the consignment of Japanese caustic soda last month, trade between New Zealand and Japan, became active for the first time since the war. Previously a shipment of raw silk and been consigned to New Zealand but had not gone there directly, passing first through Australia for processing. «

It is expected that next month shipments of timber and plywood and some rayon will leave Japan for New Zealand. Purchases from New Zealand by Japanese firms through the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers will include wool, probably hides and skins, and a certain amount of casein. It is pointed out today by the New Zealand Government representative in Japan (Mr. R. J. G. Challis) that all these transactions are being carried out by private firms in New Zealand working on import licences in the normal way. Thlir dealings must receive approval from the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers.
