Begging Letters For Jet Pioneer

Air-Commodore Frank Whittle, jet propulsion pioneer, has received a number of begging letters since the Government awarded him £lOO,OOO free of tax for his work. "If they said merely: ‘Can you spare a dime, pal?’ I wouldn’t have minded, but no one asked for less than £50,” he said. “One ■nan said he really needed £5OOO, bnt would be very happy if he received only £500.”
