Community Centre At Maxwell As War Memorial Advocated

The suggestion that the Waitotara County’s memorial to those who died in World War II should take the form of a memorial building at Maxwell adjacent to the present hall was made to yesterday’s meeting of the Waitotara County Council by Cr, W. G. Handley. The council appointed Crs. W. K. Ross, G. H. Trott .and Handley to formulate proposals for the council’s memorial. That the matter had been discussed by the Maxwell R.SA- was reported by Cr. Handley. The general feeling of the returned men was that the memorial should take the form of a small building adjacent to the hall, which could be used as a community centre. As there was an urgent need for houses, the R.S.A. was quite prepared to wait for up to two years for the building, but in the meantime wanted some action taken to decide the form the district memorial should take.

The names of those who were killed in World War II were being collected at the present and would be added on a special tablet on the present war memorial at Maxwell, said Cr. G. Palmer- This was merely the first step. With the present shortage of houses the erection of a building as a memorial might hang off for live years.

The suggestion that consideration might be given to having the memorial to World War II men at Westmere or Kai Iwi was macle by Cr. A. A. Win wood. "The erection of a community centre building which could be used by everyone was decided on by the R.S.A. members at Maxwell as being the most appropriate type of memorial,” said Cr. Handley. The money would be raised by public subscription and would be subsidised by the Department of Internal Affairs The county clerk (Mr- W. G. Broadhead) suggested that the county should set up a small sub-committee. "I think that a building* or a park is the right type of memorial. I am opposed to bricks and mortar as a memorial.” said Cr. Ross, who said he would do all in his power to further the project.
