Drop Kicked Goal Enables Hawke’s Bay To Draw With Wairarapa

IP.A.) Napier, June 7. An opportunist drop-kicked goal, two minutes before the game ended, gave Hawke's Bay an eight-all draw with Wairarapa in the annual King’s Birthday Rugby match today. Four thousand spectators watched a thrill-packed contest on a muddy field. Despite the conditions, play was open and spectacular, especially among the Wairarapa backs, for whom the All Black, Couch, was a very bright star. A try by Matthews gave Wairarapa a three-nil lead at half-time. Early in the second half Frazer crossed for Hawke’s Bay, Wishnowsky converting. Blake scored the visitor’s second try, Couch converting, for Wairarapa to lead eight to five. Just before time Churchward dropkicked a field goal, which, under the new rule, enabled Hawke’s Bay to equalise, but not win.
