Need For Building Permit May Delay Wanganui Radio Station

Although the last tenant of the top floor of Earle’s Buildings at the corner of Victoria Avenue and Guyton Street will be vacating the premises this week, there is no indication that the National Broadcasting Service will be making a start with the provision of accommodation for its studios and plant for some time. The reason for the delay is that the N.B.S. will have to secure a permit for the work from the Building Controller and housing accommodation is still the first priority. The top floor of the building was formerly occupied by the Wanganui Scouts and a teacher of dancing, a former ex-service woman with more than four years' service as a pilot in the Air Transport Auxiliary in England. The scouts vacated the premises several weeks ago but the other tenant was granted an extension until the end of June by the National Broadcasting Service which did not provide alternative accommodation. Enquiries made yesterday revealed that no date has yet been arranged for the start on the alteration of the building for its use for broadcasting. It is understood that extensive soundproofing will have to be undertaken to make the building suitable for studio purposes. The proposed Wanganui radio station has been allotted the call-sign 2XA and will operate on a frequency of 1200 kilocycles. No plans have been made for the official open, ing of the station.
