Mr. Johan Burchard Dlederik Penning has been appointed Netherlands Minister to New Zealand. He replaces Dr. A. F. Van Troosenburg De Bruyn, who resigned his appointment because of ill health.

Sub-Inspector J. Edwards, who has been in charge of the Hawera Police Station for the past seven years, leaves on Thursday to take up a new poet in Wellington. His place at Hawera will be filled by Senior-Sergeant D. W. Black, at present stationed at New Plymouth. Lieut.-Colonel A. R. Cockerell, D. 5.0., who commanded the N Force, 2nd N.Z.E.F., is to be the guest of honour at the reunion of the 2nd Battalion, Wellington West Coast Regiment, at Palmerston North next Saturday. He and Mrs. Cockerell will be the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Stewart, Marton. Mr. Wynn Smith, the New Zealand composer, was among the arrivals in the RimutaKO. at Wellington yesterday, from England. Before leaving New Zealand he was well known as a composer of music for brass bands, but has concentrated on lyrics and ballads. He is returning to England after a short visit to the Dominion. Mr. Thomas Baker, of Tarawera, whose death occurred early this month, was a last survivor of the Maori Wars, and his death closed a chaptei in New Zealand's early history, said the Minister of Social Security (Mr. Parry). The Minister added that Mr. Baker, who was born at Paekakariki in 1853, had a distinguished record in service of his country.
