Adult Education Courses Started In Wanganui This Week

Under the auspices of the Adult Education Movement two courses began in Wanganui this week in the presence of good attendances. On Monday a psychology discussion course, entitled “The Health of the Mind,” written by Professor I. L. G. Sutherland, was commenced. The second evening of this discussion will be held on June 21. On Tuesday night a tutorial course was taken by Mr. L. M. H. Cave, M.A, and was entitled “Language and Clear Thinking.” Each courst is to last 10 weeks.

“Language and Clear Thinking” contains much that should be of interest to many. It deals with the power of words and with superstitions and prejudices attached to them; it deals with their very nature. It shows how our attitudes towards them colour our thoughts and actions and obstruct clear thought. There will be discussion on propaganda and on tricks and fallacies in argument. One lecture will deal with discriminating between what is honest and worthwhile in writing and what is dishonest and worthless, how to set standards cf taste in literature The course deals also with the origins and hisl tory of our own language, present-day tendencies and its future, English in New Zealand, slang, our chaotic spelling (reasons and reforms tha( have been suggested), international language, as well as other aspects requested by those who attend the course.

Film evenings will take place from the last half of June in the Technical | College Hall. Every four weeks there will be films showing development of artistic technique; there will be an accompanying lecture to each. At 1 four-weekly intervals intermediate to i 1 hese there will be talks with illustrative films; subjects include horticulture, soil erosion, and anthropology.
