HOCKEY FIXTURES AND UMPIRES FOR SATURDAY

Two u£ the leading teams in the Rangitikei Women's Hockey senior competition —Te Kauwau and fuis will provide the main fixture in the district on Saturday. This has so far been unbeaten, while Te Kawau suffered its first loss of the season last week when it went down narrowly to United, winners of the championship Lite previous season. Men’s hockey was played on Saturday on grounds that were very heavy and play was not of a high order. Marton suffered another defeat this time at the hands of Halcombe on a ground which at the end was practically under water. Results: Wanderers 7 beat Swifts 2; Rovers 5 beat Makino 2; Halcombe 4 beat Marton 1. MARTON SCHOOL TO BE PROVIDED WITH SOUND PROJECTOR. Efforts are being made by the Marton District High School Home and School Association to provide the children with a sound projector and to raise funds for this purpose a dance is being held in the Victory Hall on Saturday night, final arrangements for which were made at a committee meeting on Tuesday nignt. All the latest educational films now coming to hand have a sound track, but these cannot be shown on the silent machine at present possessed by the school. Marks’ orchestra will provide the music for the dance and there will be numerous novelty numbers. The association has almost completed the final check of names of those ex-pupils who lost their lives while serving in the last war. The names are to be inscribed on two marble plaques in the form of a memorial at the school, and these plaques will be placed on either side of the present Roll of Honour Board in the assembly hall of the school. Altnougn steady rain tell throughout the afternoon, this did not (icier some 40 members of the Kangitikei Hunt Club from braving the elements on Saturday and attending the popular hunt at "Closeburn." Followers were certainly compensated for turning out in such weather as hounds went off in full cry from the road paddock and Huntsman Goodwin was hard pressed to keep with his pack for the afternoon. Even when heads were turned for home some three miles away, the whips had a very busy time keeping the pack in check, as hounds were still lull of running. On arrival back at the roadside, thoroughly wet, imagine the feelings of the bedraggled wnen greeted with hot tea and toast. Mrs. McLean and Mrs. Nitschke had boiled the billy, despite the rain, thus sending everyone on their way feeling at least inwardly warmer. TRANSPORT LICENSING. Amendments to a passenger service licence was granted F. C. Garrard, mail contractor, by the No. 2 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr. J. P. O. Skoglund) at a sitting in Marton cn Tuesday afternoon. Applicant, who was respi'esented by Mr. D. B. Sladden, asked for an alteration in tiie timetable to fit in with mails and for the convenience of passengers. A letter was submitted irom the Post and Telegraph Department approving of the new times. The alteration agreed to was for the service to leave Bulls at 1U a.m. arrive at Marton 10.45 a.m. depart Marton 12 noon, arrive Bulls 1.30 pun. leave Bulls 3 p.m. tor Scott's Ferry and arrive back at Bulls at 4.30 p.m. An application by D. M. Chapman (Bulls) for an adjustment in the contract passenger rates was adjourned sine die. MARTON ROTARY CLUB. Marton Rotarians at their tea on Monday night heard recorded talks of two of the main addresses given at the Dominion conference in Auckland recently. Recordings of talks, including one by Dr. E. M. Blacklock, Professor of Classics al the Auckland University College and another by MrHarold Thomas, a past District Governor ol Rotary International, were made at the conference and are being circulated among New Zealand Rotary Clubs. INTER-CLUB HARRIER RACE. The inter-club harrier race between Marton and Feilding will take place at Feilding on Saturday. The distance for seniors is 61 miles and fertile colts two miles. Marton harrier's will travel by bus which will leave the gasworks at 1 p.m. sharp. ROAD IMPROVEMENTS. For the purpose of discussing improvements to the Bulls-Scott's Ferry Road a meeting of ratepayers and

others interested has been convened by the chairman of the Rangltikei County Council, Mr. K. W. Dalrymple. This meeting will be held in the Parewanui School on Tuesday, June 1, at 7.30 p.m.

FLUORESCENT LIGHTING TO BE INSTALLED BY SHOOTING CLUB. The Marton Miniature Rifle Club has made arrangements for the installation of fluorescent lighting at its hall at Marton Junction. There was an excellent attendance at the shoot on May 17, the highlight being the 100.6 returned by D. Caughley. The A and B teams shot on the Mcßoberts match targets and the rest of the members on the metric. Individual scores were: D. Caughley 100.6, J. Hunt 99.7, I. Allison 98.5, N. Whale, W. MANY RIDERS ATTEND PONY CLUB HUNT.

In perfect weather, some 80 youhg riders, all members of the Rangitikel Pony Club, participated in a very successful hunt arranged by the Rangitikei Hunt Club last week at Heaton Park. A great deal of interest was taken in the meet by adults, several score attending in cars. Prior to setting out with the hounds, Pony Club members were addressed by Mr. F. McLean, master of the hunt, who stated that the club looked to the young members present to provide membership in the future. Pony Club members following the hounds were;—Taoroa branch: Mrs. W. R.
