REPAIRS TO HIGHWAY P.W.D. gangs have been busy repairing sections of the highway between Mangaweka and Taihape which have been damaged by various causes such as slips, washouts, and subsidences. The benefit of the sealing of macadam patches is particularly felt on the hilly section between L'tiku and Mangaweka. PERSONAL NOTES Mr. Sandy Power, of the Taihape P.O. staff, was on relieving duties at the Utiku Post Office during the past week. Miss Leona Jago, of Ohakune, was a visitor to Utiku for the HusseyGardiner wedding. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Lawton, Omatane, have returned home from their annual holidays, spent in the north. Mr R. Wall, Omatane school teacher, has returned to duty after the term holidays. Mrs. R. Smith and family, Ridge Road, Taihape, are spending their holidays in Auckland. Mr. Jack Bardell, Taoroa, who recently fractured an ankle when the horse he was riding te l on nim, has made a good recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Don Bergin and daughter Derraine, of Cheltenham, are on annual holiday visiting friends and relatives in Utiku before proceeding to Foxton. Master Bill Buckley, of Auckland, is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Frank Troon, Taoroa. Mrs. J. S. Watson, who last week underwent a serious operation in Auckland, is making an excellent recovery. The death occurred in the Wanganui Hospital on May 21 of Mrs. Ellen Ritchie, a former well known resident of Utiku and a member of the wellknown Frederick family of Marton. Mrs. Ritchie was aged 56, and is survived by her three sons, James, Lewis and Benjamin. Her husband predeceased her three years ago. After residing in Utiku for many years Mrs. Ritchie and her family moved to Marton. BOXING POSTPONED Although much effort had been put into the preliminary organisation by the Taihape Boxing Association of a tournament to have been held next Saturday, May 29, the response In entries from outside associations was so poor that the association has decided to postpone the fixture. (Note advertisement elsewhere.) Although four schools are in action in Taihape and district, many of the pupils are immature and hardly ready for entry in a tournament. HOMESERVICEMEN’S ASSOCIATION The annual meeting of tlje Taihape branch of the New Zealand Homeservicemen's Association was be d on Saturday evening. There was an attendance of 16 members. The retiring president (Mr. A. M. Gordon) presented a most comprehensive report of the year’s activities. Mr. M. Nicol was elected president for the year, Mr. W. B. Marks vice-president, and Mr. W. Hayes secretary, together with a strong executive and several sub-committees. ST. JOHN NURSING DIVISION The honour of gaining the seventh Grand Prior Badge in the Taihape Cadet Nursing Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade goes to Brenda Marjory George, who, by passing her 12th test recently, qualified fcr this award. The subject was the history of the Order of St. John, and the following members who also passed have qua.ified fcr their first proficiency badge (four subjects) (—Helen Smith, Helen Fleet, Lois Currie, Betty Johansen, Judith Little, Hazel Fannin. The final meeting foi last term was in the foim of a tea social when eacn member invited a friend. Games, competitions, charades and community singing provided much amusement.
