Empire Nationality To Embrace The Term Commonwealth Citizen

(Special COrraipondent—N.Z.P.A.) Recd. 6 p.m. London, May 25. The Government has tabled an amendment to the British Nationality Bill in the House of Lords providing that any person having the status of a British subject within the provisions of the Bill may choose an alternative description of “Commonwealth citizen," and that for all purposes the terms "British subject” and “Commonwealth citizen” shall have the same meaning.

During the House of Lords debate on the second reading of the Bill several speakers said the expression “British subject” might not be acceptable to all peoples of the Commonwealth. The Lord Chancellor (Lord Jowitt) agreed that a better expression might be found, and said the Dominion’s Governments would be consulted. The amendment now tabled has followed as the result of these consultations.
