Recd. 6 p.m. Washington, May 24 The United States Air Force headquarters said today it was “completely mystified” by a report that a Brit’sh Overseas Airways Corporation dying-boat had been intercepted and had shots fired across its path by an American jet fighter south of Okinawa It was making urgent inquiries through Tokio headquarters. A spokesman said: “If it is true it is an extremely regrettable and unfortunate matter and must, of course, have been due to misunderstanding. 8.0.A.C. operate through that area . with our full knowledge permission and approval. We always have been ready to help them.” Neither the 8.0.A.C. offices here nor the Civil Air Attache’s Department in the British Embassy, have received any instructions on the matter from London.
