Backers Of Bon Chale Did Their Money “Cold”

When the Trentham-trained Bon Chale took no part in the second division of the Moutoa Hack Handicap at Foxton on Saturday, his supporters, who had invested £lOl (win) and £ll7 (place) on the Philamor geiaing’s chances, did not get a run for their money. Prior to the despatch of the second division T. Regan, who rode Bon Chale, was thrown when the saddle gear broke. As it was impossible to make effective repairs and too great a delay would have meant holding up the race schedule, already behind time, a steward ordered the field to be despatched without Bon Chale. The Moutoa Hack Handicap was for apprentice riders only, and Bon Chale was ridden by T. Regan, who was fined £1 for having faulty gear, in spite of the fact that the saddle was a borrowed one. The rule makes it mandatory to fine the rider responsible for faulty gear. It might be suggested that the trainer to whom Regan is apprenticed shouhl also be held responsible for making sure that the gear he used was beyond reproach. At any rate, Bon Chale’s backers lost £2lB without getting a run. Auckland Scratchings Detain and Lord Dundonald were scratched for al] engagements at. the Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting at 4.40 p.m. last Thursday. A Press Association message from Auckland announced that. Master Mei uit was withdrawn from the Great Northern Steeplechase. Master Meruit pulled a shoulder muscle last week and will go home to Gisborne to recuperate.
