FOOTBALL: HUNTER VILLE ' BEAT ATHLETIC (0.C.) Hunterville, May 3. Piped on to the field, Hunterville 'and Athletic played an entertaining game of Rugby, Hunterville winning by 11, three tries, 1 converted, to Athletic 3 (penalty). Noticeable among a good pack, Athletic players were M. C. Davitt, Garley, Kinloch and Price. McLennen and Hutton were the pick of the backs, McLennen being outstnding as half-back. Hunterville’s pack was much improved on last Saturday’s game, England, M. Bartlett, Rowley and Dillon showing up in the forwards. Barnes, at half, showed he had lost none of his old dash, while J. Illston proved a tower of strength at centre. Stevens, at Ist. and Wright at fhll-back, showed improvement. Athletic playing, on the down grade, were soon on attack, their forwards giving their backs a feast of the ball, which they could not turn to good account. Led by England, Hunterville attacked, England missing with a penalty. From a ruck in mid-field, Rowley ran his winger into position, N. Illston going over in the corner. England found the posts with a beauty. Hunterville 5, Athletic 0. McLennen broke through from a scrum, but lost possession, his forwards carrying on to the line, where a penalty to Hunterville brought relief.

After oranges, Athletic were soon on the attack, Price going close, but Hunterville forwards, driving them downfield, where from a scrum, Stevens received, short punted, J. Illston gathered in the ball and scored In a handy position. England missed, making the score Hunterville 8, Athletic 0.

At this stage Athletic lost Hutton, Gibbs being the replacement. Up and down play followed, Hunterville getting the best of the exchanges. Fowler retired and Hutton returned to the field. Stevens by sheer pace cut through for all the backs to handle, the ball eventually coming back to the forwards for Rowley to score the best try of the day. England missed. Hunterville 11. Athletic 0. At this stage Athletic forwards came with a determined rush, carrying play to their opponent’s line, where Hunterville was penalised. Garley made no mistake. Hunterville 11, Athletic 3. Spurred on by their success, Athletic kept up the attack until the final whistle, with no further score. R. Batchelor held the whistle.

HOCKEY. HUNTERVILLE v TUIS. Although beaten by the more experienced teffm at the opening match of the Rangitikei Ladies’ Hockey on Saturday, Hunterville playing their first game in senior competition were not disgraced. Play was very even for the first quarter of an hour of the first spell, when P. Royal netted Tuis first goal. Hunterville had many chances, but lack of finish in circle and poor combination prevented them from scoring. B. Iwakau netted again for Tuis. Tuis left wing with her tricky stick work beat the Hunterville players every time. Hunterville had many opportunities in the second spell, Mrs Hansen playing excellent hockey, but lack of forward support prevented her from scoring. M. Moore was tower of strength as centre half. P. Royal again netted for Tuis, making the final score 3 nil in Tuis favour. Mrs. Griffin and R. Watson were referees.
