Heavy Loss Feared Over Shipments Of Sugar

Sydney, May 1. If sugar could not be shipped overseas more quickly, about one-third of the cane crop would be lost, said leading representatives of the Australian sugar industry. This would mean that Australia would be guilty of a serious default in its undertakings to the British Ministry of Food. They blamed the waterside workers for the position, and said that all sections of the sugar industry had combined in representations to the Stevedoring Industry Commission, which was now considering the matter. The sugar industry officials said that to avoid a catastrophe the sugar must be shipped at the rate about 55 per cent, faster than last year, otherwise sugar worth about £6,000,000 would be lost.
