THE LAND OF ENGLAND AND OF N.Z.

Sir, —I have read your leader of April 23, re the Italian elections, and also the letter “The Land and the People,” by J. R. Finlay, in today's “Chronicle," and I write to point out to your correspondent that while I agree in the main concerning land and production of New Zealand, it does not apply to any degree in the Mother Land. England is mainly a manufacturing country and the farm area is very small as compared to New Zealand, though both these countries are of the same size, geographically speaking. If Erffeland was in the same favoured position as what God's Own Country (N Z.) is today, the Mother Land would not be so severely dependent on her Dominions and colonies for her food supplies. I quite understand J. R. Finlay's desire to further food production in New Zealand, that England may have more and still more to feed her teeming millions, and so this may be done, we must have population in this country who completely understand farming and soil production, but to bring people from England here to New Zealand for the one and sole purpose of food production, who know next to nothing about farming and all it entails, would not be a very sane proceeding. What is needed is the right people for the right purpose. The right faith, honesty of purpose. and the willingness to work, will do all .at that J. R. Finlay has in for land development in New Zealand, with the end in view, to help England. Such people in this country will make money the servant of man, and men the servant of God. I am, etc., — “MAYNARD.”
