There Will Be No Coup In Italy, Says Premier
‘ Recd. 8.40 p m. Rome, April 10. There will be no coup d’etat in , Italy after the general elections on Sunday next, declared the Prime Minister (Signor de Gasperi) in a speech at Pisa. De Gasperi said there was no need to worry during the crucial period from Sunday until three weeks later, when the new Parliament convenes to name the new President. “Italy is not. a Balkan country, where a regime can be improvised,’’ he said. “I will hold power by force. ’ The Mayor and 15 councillors of Corleone caused hundreds of other Socialists to follow their example when they transferred on bloc from the Communist Socialist Party, led by the vice-Premier (Signor Saragat). Corleone is known as one of the , most extreme left of Sicilian towns. The Communist and Socialist-con- . trolled “Popular Democratic Front,” . in an electoral manifesto, described Signor de Gasperls’ Government as being tied to hysterical reactionary American and European groups, which , were preparing a third world war.
