BRILLIANT HALF-MILE by S. McKenzie at TWILIGHT SPORTS

A brilliant run by the half-miler, S. McKenzie, who chopped 3 1-fLecs. off his previous best time of 2min. for the -event and set an unofficial best for New Zealand this track season, highlighted the twilight sports meeting held on Cook’s Gardens yesterday by the Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. McKenzie began strongly in the half-mile event and soon cleared out from a rather weak field, only Doreen challenging him after the bell. Tiring over the final stages, McKenzie would probably not have bettered two minutes on his own. But sprinter F. Henderson lapped him round the back stretch and into the final straight, so that the long-striding McKenzie finished well and returned his excellent time. In the junior half-mile, W. Hickey ran a well judged race to chalk up his best performance of the season. Although the 500 metres cycling trial for the selection of riders to appear in the West Coast meeting was speeded up by increasing the number of competitors in each race from two to three, and then four, it was impossible to complete it before dark. Laidlaw won the 1000 metres time trial event, having the edge on Clinton by one-fifth second. There was a large attendance of spectators and athletes at the meeting, which was voted by officials as one of the most successful experienced this season. Results: — 100 yards, men (first heat): P. The matter of erosion of this type was amply catered foq in the by-laws of the board. Mr. L. I. Grange said that the worst offenders were the local bodies.
