ONEHUNGA WINS N.Z., BOWLING FOURS
FRANKTON JUNCTION BEATEN IN THE FINAL (P.A.) Dunedin, Jan. 27 The Onehunga four—J. H. Mingins (s), H. A. Robertson, E. Livingstone, T. Macklow—won the final of the Dominion fours bowling championship today when the New Zealand Bowling Association’s annual tournament concluded. Form in the final was disappointing, the fours deteriorating into a driving competition, ten heads being burned before the game finished on the 23rd. end. The tournament was easily the largest in Dominion bowling history, and was conducted without a hitch in spite of delays caused the first week by inclement weather. The St. Kilda green, which withstood 14 days' tournament play, was slow for the final of the tours between a Frankton Junction team—P. E. Exelby (skip), R. W. Hawkins, J. Morris and W. G. Payne—and the Onehunga four. After the first two ends Onehunga led 6-0. Frankton Junction attempted to nullify the superior drawing by Mingins’ four by burning, the driving specialist being Morris. Macklow, the Onehunga lead, who played well throughout the fours games, took a long time- to settle down, but after more than half the ends were played he performed some brilliant work, gaining a succession of touchers. Livingstone played an important part in Onehunga r s win. His accurate drawing helped consolidate his side’s position frequently. Exelby, recognised as one of the greatest tournament players in the Dominion, very rarely outdrew the opposing skip, Mingins, who played Confidently,, in a game to decide the minor place-fillers in the fours championship, F. White’s Runanga team defeated a Canterbury four skipped by J. W. Turpin, 20-18. Results: PAIRS Final: S. Garelja and M. A. Marinovich (Oratia) 34, A. J. Webster and G. Littlejohn (Lower Hutt) 12.
