INDIA HARD-PRESSED IN TEST MATCH

HAD TO FOLLOW ON (N.Z.P.A.—Copyright.) Reed. 9.15 p.m. Adelaide, Jan. 27 The Indians, after making 381 in their first innings in reply to the huge total of 674 knocked up by the Australians, had to follow on in the test today. At stumps they had made six wickets for 188 in the second innings. Phadkar completed a fine century, his first in Australia, with a series of powerful leg shots when the match was resumed. Hazare was slow at the start of play, but stayed until the partnership for the sixth wicket had added 188. He batted 265 minutes and hit 14 fours. Phadkar reached his century in 210 minutes and batted all told for 255 minutes. He hit 15 fours. Hazare played a fine hand to record second century for the game. He is the seventh batsman to record the feat in tests. Others are Bardsley, Morris and Eradman (Australia) and Sutcliffe, Hammond and Compton (England). Hazare batted 174 minutes for his century. He hit 15 fours. Resistance cracked after the sixth partnership had been broken. India trailing 293 runs following on. Johnson was the pick of the Australian bowlers throughout the game and deserved to finish with the best figures. His four for 64 off 23.1 overs was a good effort.. Weather conditions today were still hot but more pleasant than yesterday. Lindwall worked up to a great speed in his second spell. He had a breeze behind him but this did not account for the increased pace. He had India facing defeat with more than two days to spare soon after tea when he took the wickets of Phadkar and Kishenchand. Lindwall wrecked any hopes India may have had of saving the game in the first over. With the last two deliveries he dismissed Mankad and Amarnath. Two wickets fell without a run on the board. Mankad was hit on the pads twice, surviving an appeal for leg before once. Then a ball found the edge of the bat and Tallon took a fine catch. Amarnath was bowled by a yorker. With two of the best batsmen out, and more than two days remaining for play, the Indians were in a bad position four minutes after the start of the second innings. Sarwate battled along with Hazare but was beaten by Toshack. At the tea adjournment India was still 216 runs behind with seven wickets in hand.
