POREWA’S NARROW WIN OVER JUNCTION AT TENNIS

By a margin of seven games, Porewa defeated Marton Junction in the inter-club tennis match played at the week-end. At the close of the afternoon’s play each team had won 12 sets, and the contest had to be decided on games, Porewa emerging victorious. There was very little between the two clubs and this was demonstrated by the scoring. In the men’s and ladies' singles and the combined doubles each club won three sets. Porewa won all the men's doubles, while Junction won all the ladies’ doubles. SELLING LIQUOR WITHOUT A LICENCE ENDS IN £lO FINE A charge of selling liquor without a licence brought John Jefferson, labourer, before Mr, A. Coleman, S.M., in the Marton Court yesterday morning. Through his counsel, Mr. K. A. Williams, defendant pleaded guilty and was fined £lO (costs £1 2s). The magistrate made an order for the confiscation of 13 bottles of liquor seized. Serge; 11 W. J. Brown conducted the case for the police.

ELECTION OF FIRE QUEEN TOMORROW NIGHT The election ~ f the Fire Queen to contest the M; .ton Fire Brigade’s queen carnival being inaugurated next riirmth will be held in the Fire Brigade Hall tomorrow evening. All residents are entitled to vote. Five candidates have been nominated and electors will be asked to vote for a Fire Queen and two Princesses. The candidates are Misses Delores Downs, Pat Kendrick, Dulcie Morris, Doreen Pearson and Fay Thompson. The sponsors of the Fire Queen held a meeting on Monday night, when Mr. F. Lovett was elected chairman of the committee and Mr. Ray Griffin secretary. ONEPUHI FARMER APPEARS IN MARTON COURT Pleading guilty to a charge that on November 1, 1946, at Onepuhi, he did, contrary to his duty, wilfully detain a postal packet, a married man, with six children, Hula Chase, a farmer residing at Onepuhi, was convicted and fined £7 (costs 10s) by Mr. A. Coleman, S.M., in the Marton Court yesterday morning. A request by the accused for the suppression of his name was refused by the magistrate. Sergeant W. J. Brown, outlining the case for the police, said that the accused received in his mail a letter addressed to another person. Accused opened the letter, found a cheque inside for £5 18s ‘ld, endorsed it and later cashed it. In imposing the penaltv the magistrate drew accused's attention to the seriousness of the charge.
