SPARKLING CRICKET BY INDIA’S CAPTAIN

(N.Z.P.A.—Copyright.) Recd. 6.30 p.m. Adelaide, Jan. 26 Amarnath played sparkling cricket when India resumed their first innings today. He stopped the hat trick for Miller by hitting the first ball of the day for four. The attendance of 4000 at the start increased to 10,000 by lunch. The weather was fine, but hot, with the temperature reaching 105.2. Amarnath scored 24 in the second quarter-hour period of the day. Particularly severe on McCool, he took 14 off the slow man's first over. Perfect cover drives were features of his early knock. The Indians took 46 minutes to hoist the first 50. The time was 13 minutes faster than Australia’s first 50. Amarnath was out when trying to drive a full toss 'from Johnson, giving Bradman the first catch for the match. Amarnath batted 54 minutes and hit five fours. Mankad played a solid knock, with rare patches of brilliance. He took 141 minutes to score 49. Three of his last four scoring shots were fours off successive balls from Toshack. Gul Mahomed attempted to force the pace. He swung himself off his feet once in trying to sweep McCool. When he was stumped by Tallon, all dash and enterprise went out of the Indian innings. Hazare was very slow and scored only 28 runs between lunch and tea. The weather had to take some measure of blame for the drab display, but negative batting by the Indians flattered the Australian attack, which was never dangerous. Lindwall was watched closely in this game, being no-balled only once in six overs todav, but he dragged over the line in almost all deliveries. Hazare and Phadkar were seen in a good recovery for the sixth wicket. They reached 50 in 72 minutes and 100 in 111. Johnson was the only Australian bowler to maintain a test standard under trying conditions. Hazare registered a century, his first in the tests here, in 224 minutes, including 11 fours. The partnership realised 150 in 144 minutes, at stumps. Scores:
