STARTER TOO LENIENT TO FRACTIOUS HORSES

L. J. Ellis, rider of Wantwood in the City Handicap, was called Before the judicial committee of the Wellington Racing Club on Saturday to explain why he had started from No. 1 at the barrier instead of No. 7. The explanation of Ellis, which was corroborated by the starter, W. Price, was accepted. The start was delayed several minutes by the bad behaviour of Morocco and Flowerburn, and Price was asked for an explanation. The stewards reprimanded the siarter for not exercising the powers given him to deal with fractious horses, his failure to do so resulting in some of the horses starting from wrong positions.
