BEVIN’S PLAN DESCRIBED BY RUSSIAN PAPER AS DECLARATION OF WAR
Recd. 6 p.m. Berlin. Jan 23 The “Nacht Express,” an organ of the Russian Military Government, accuses Mr Bevin of playing with lire. It describes his western European proposals as leading to the creation of a bloc which the eastern world can only regard as a plain declaration of war without the formalities of such a declaration. “His assurance that what the British Government is no\y undertaking is not directed against the Soviet Union is dismissed as a paltry and unconvincing gesture,” says the paner The Moscow radio quoted a Tass news agency message which described Mr. Bevin’s speech as "a smokescreen for the creation of a so-called western bloc, the formation of which already had been started by Britain, France, Belgium, Holland, and Luxembourg.”
