(N.Z.P.A. —Copyright.) Recd. 6 p.m. Adelaide, Jan. 24 Hassett and Miller gave a brilliant display of batting on the resumption of Australia’s first inning!,. This period was the bowlers’ best for the game, two wickets falling for 29 after lunch. McCool and Hassett put on 50 in 39 minutes. Then the fourth new ball for the innings beat McCool. Hassett reached .-50 after 257 minutes, including 12 fours. Wickets tumbled at the southern end, where a patch was developing on the pitch. Johnson and Hassett put on 50 in 43 minutes. Lindwall and Tallon went quickly. One of the highlights of the innings came with Toshack, las‘ man at the wicket. Recognised as one of the greatest rabbits ever to bat for Australia, Toshack defended stolidly, taking 18 minutes to open his score. He stayed at the wicket 43 minutes while Hassett carried his score from 174 to 198. Hassett remained not out, having batted a total of 324 minutes, and hitting 12 fours.
