N.Z. HORSES UNPLACED IN RANDWICK MUD

Recd. 7.30 p.m. Sydney, Jan. 25. Heavy conditions and constant drizzling rain at Randwick yesterday proved disastrous to the strongly favoured former New Zealanders Nizam's Ring, Kerry Lad and Piccolo. Winner of eight races and unbeaten at her five previous starts, Nizam’s Ring finished second last in the Valicare Handicap, in which she was an odds-on favourite. Carrying 91b less, Shading won easily. The Challenge Stakes, which proved (o be a mud bath for the jockeys, wan won by Gay Monarch at the Leger. Bought for 55gns., Gay Monarch has now returned over £BOOO in stake money. Both Kerry Lad and Piccolo were handy in the early stages of the January Handicap and Kerry Lad led for home, but both appeared beaten by the distance. They were heavily weighted with 8.10 and 8.11, against the 7.0 carried by the winner. Royal Lad. The place-getters, all lightly weighted, produced a terrific finish. The jockey Darby Munro, who scored a treble during the afternoon, was suspended for two months for careless riding.
