WELLINGTON MEETING OPENS TODAY AT TRENTHAM

Cup and Telegraph as Features in Attractive Card

With the Wellington Cup and the Telegraph Handicap as feature events, the Wellington Racing Club has an attractive programme to offer at Trentham today for the opening of its summer meeting, which will extend over three days. The fixture will be continued on Thursday of next week, the Anniversary Day holiday, and will be concluded next Saturday.

Supporting the Cup and Telegraph today will be sueh events as the Anniversary Handicap, an open mile, and the Wellington Stakes, a six-furlong event for juveniles and three-year-olds at weight-for-age. The two-year-olds will also have a chance in the Fitzherbert Handicap, and in addition to the opening highweight event there are two races for hacks. Good fields are engaged throughout the day, with the exception of the Wellington Stakes. Ever since the weights were issued for the Wellington Cup and it was evident that the handicapper had done the obvious thing in allotting Beau le Havre 9.9, the maximum impost under the conditions of the race, the Beau Repaire horse has been favourite in discussions on the twomile event. That position he appears certain to retain when the totalisator closes at 2.18 p.m. today. Judging by his meritorious win in the New Zealand Cup under 93 and his fine effort to finish fifth in the Auckland Cup under 9.11, Beau le Havre looks like justifying the confidence reposed in him by his army of supporters. King’s Ransom won two races at the Trentham spring meeting, and after finishing third to Howe and Balgowan in the Auckland Cup, to get second money when Howe was deposed, he won the Racing Club Handicap on the third day at Ellerslie. Beau le Havre meets him on 121 b better terms than in the Auckland Cup. and at that difference the tables may be turned. Howe has proved his ability to stay, and he has paid the penalty of his Ellerslie form, where he won the Summer Cup after sensationally losing the Auckland Cup honours. He has run some of his best races at Trentham, and as he will be at the top of his form he is certain to prove hard to beat.

Balgowan secured the thick end of the prize in the tussle for the Auckland Cup and proved the first of the Coronachs to win over two miles. He has become solid with racing and there will be no fitter horse when the final stages are entered on. Royal Tan was second to Beau le Havre in the New Zealand Cup, and that may be accepted as his true form, for his defeat at Ellerslie may be accounted for to some extent through inability to handle the going when racing the reverse way. As soon as he became accustomed to it he finished second to King's Ransom in the A.R.C. Handicap and second to Lord Revel in the Nathans Memorial.

Langue d'Or generally runs good races at Trentham but he would have to improve on his holiday form to gain a place in this field. Regal Praise has run and won some solid races up north, but there are several below her who may be better fancied. Robin’s Reward is a game customer who is seldom out of a place, though the company may be just too good over the distance.

Indian Dawn, a previous winner at Trentham, where she accounted for the Apprentices’ Hack and the Desert Gold Stakes twelve month! ago, was recently the winner of the Dunedin Cup. One of her best races was in the Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton, where she ran Signal Officer to a neck. She will be one of the fancied Riccarton candidates. Broiefield ran one of his best races when he finished second, beaten a neck by Bruce, in the Cup twelve months ago, and Royal Victor was third to Beau le Havre and Royal Tan in the New Zealand Cup. Best of the second half of the field, however, may be the Southland representative Spare Part. This Salmagundi gelding has won at his last four starts, his most recent successes being in the Invercargill Cup and the Southland Handicap. He will carry the full confidence of a host of Soutn , Island admirers. Several winners during the holiday i meetings are included, with Loyal i Bian, Barrage, Desert Fox and Grill appealing. In addition, Stony Broke, Authentic and Falconbridge must be given fair chances, but when the held is summed up backers may be found voting strongly for Beau le Havre, Spare Part and Royal Tan. TELEGRAPH HANDICAP The second “leg” of the double, the Telegraph Handicap, has also attracted a strong field, headed by an outstanding Auckland sprinter in Majesty, with the Stewards' Handicap winner. Wantwood, in receipt of 21b. Flowerbum and Blue Trout were winners at Ellerslie. Deprive won at the Wairarapa and Pahiatua meetings. Aggravation scored at Awapuni and Stratford. Frances was a winner at Riccarton. The Pagan won at Awapuni and was narrowly beaten at Marton. Sea Fury won at Otaki and Marton. Cressida scored r.t Stratford and Castlebrae at Awapuni. This will give some idea of the wsalt.i of sprinting talent. Further, there are several that have gained places in recent essays. In a strong sprint field Aggravation. Majesty and The Pagan may be fancied. TAULOCH AND GREAT TREK In the Wellington Stakes, in which there are eight engaged, the issue may be between the '-rack Auckland colt Tauloch and the brilliant three-year-old Great Trek, winner of the Railway Handicap. A preference may he shown for the juvenile, Tauloch, with Great Trek and Magical as his most dangerous opponents. One of the most difficult fields to sum up will be the Anniversary Handicap, for the majority of the 28 engaged have excellent form to commend them to backers. As a consistent but unlucky three-year-old Disinction may be selected to repeat what smother of his age in Howe did last year. Carmelita and Night School may extend him. In the strong fields engaged in other events today there is the clement of many a surprise, but investors may be found supporting the following in their respective engagements:—

Te Marua Highweight. Beneve, Rothnic, Tribute. Wellington Stakes, Tauloch, Great Trek, Magicpl* Pencarrow Hack . Handicap. Calm Courage, Arlgell, Miss Baimsfather. Fitzherbert'Handicap.
