RUSH FOR SUPPLIES IN AUCKLAND (P.A? • Auckland, Dec. 29. Pleasure travelling Is likely to be restricted during the New Year holidays as current petrol supplies are almost exhausted. Retailers in Auckland do not hold out much hope of meeting motorists’ needs until New Year's Day. when the January quota is available. Even then the hours during which petrol can be sold, except for emergency purposes, aie limited to between 8 am. and 11 a.m. and the demand during that time will be unusually heavy. Unbroken streams of motor-cars visited bowser stations in the city and suburbs all this morning, and there were queues at the larger stations. The drain on depleted supplies available since Christmas was particularly heavy and although the main vendors were able to cope with the demand most of the small stations had closed by mid-day. One of the biggest sellers of petrol in the citv estimated he had 1000 gallons left to meet the needs of motorists in the last two days of the month. Nearly all stations had stocked up with their January quota but were able to supply only the current allowance.
