OTAGO HAS LEAD IN FIRST INNINGS AGAINST WELLINGTON

(P.A.) Wellington, Dec. 28 A crowd of 4000 spectators at the ; Basin Reserve on Saturday were' keyed up to a high pitch by the exciting and successful effort of Otago' batsmen to head the 263 runs which had been set them by Wellington in I the Plunket Shield match. i With two wickets down for 120 at I the luncheon adjournment, Otago appeared to be in a winning position ! 1 but the break proved disastrous to i the batting side as three wickets felll without a run being scored at 129, and the southerners were again fighting for runs. However, a spirited stand by R. St. John and the Otago captain (Langford Smith), which put on 82 for the seventh wicket, carried the score to 250 and saved the day I for Otago. Amid the keenest ex- i citement, the score gradually crept' up and eventually the Wellington I total of 263 was headed by nine runs.. Wellington, in its second strike, had scored 23 without a loss atl stumps. The weather was fine with a I strong north-westerly wind. Scores:
