QUEEN MARY ACKNOWLEDGES N.Z. CHRISTMAS CAKE

The Ladies’ Linen Guild of St. John, in Wellington, recently contributed part of their rations in sugar, butter, and eggs for the making of a presentation Christmas cake for Queen Mary, who is president of the Guild in the British Isles. It was encased in a special presentation tin and taken to Britain in the personal rare of a traveller Queen Mary expresses her thanks for the cake in the following letter received by her Excellency Lady Freyberg, president of the Linen Guild in New Zealand, and forwarded to Lady Elliott, who is the Guild’s chairman. Written from Marlborough House, it reads as follows: — “Dear Lady Freyberg,—l should like to send a few words of my personal thanks to you and through you to Lady Elliott and the members of the Ladies’ Linen Guild of the Order of St. John in New Zealand, who so generously sent m e the beautiful New Zealand cake for Christmas. “I am deeply touched by the charming thought that prompted these kind ladies to contribute towards making a cake for me, and I want them to know how greatly I value not only their most acceptable gift but also the moving words of your mesage from them which accompanied it. “It was, of course, of special interest to me to learn that these ladies, who worked throughout the war as a St. John working party, have formed themselves into the Linen Guild in New Zealand and are now sending supplies to the Opthalmic Hospital in Jerusalem. With my warmest thanks I send my best wishes to you all for Christmas and the New Year.—Yours very sincerely, MARY R.’’
