NORTH ISLAND TENNIS AT HAWERA

OPENING DAY’S PLAY

(P.A.) New Plymouth, Dec. 28 Surprisingly good tennis was produced in the early rounds of the North Island lawn tennis championships which opened at Hawera today. Rain fell shortly before 5 p.m. and caused abandonment of play for the day.

A match that created most interest was that between Miss B. Potter (Auckland!, who is Classed among the six or seven best players in New Zealand, with the yduthlul Miss M. Hodges (Auckland). During the first games Miss Hodges seemed to be outclassed, but she rallied to win the first set 6-8. However, Miss Potter took the next two sets.

Another feature was the closeness of a match between W. T. Pountney (Auckland), and D. Green (Otago), who took the first set and in the second set th e score was 5-5 when Pountney took the lead and maintained it and won.
