SLIPS CAUSE DELAYS TO TRAINS IN THE SOUTH ISLAND

Christchurch, Dec. 26 Both the Greymouth-Christchurch and Christchurch-Greymouth expresses were held up this afternoon by a slip on the line about a mile from Arthur’s Pass on the Canterbury side. Passengers were transhipped and both trains returned to their starting point. Passengers had to walk about 50 yards through the rain. The line was cleared by 9 p.m. Heavy rain has been general in the Alps since late on Christmas Eve. and the Otira Road to the West Coast is washed out in three places. The South Canterbury Catchment Board has broadcast precautionary warning to farmers to move stock from low-lying areas near the Rangitata and Orari Rivers.
