The sheriff in the capital city of the prohibition State of Oklahoma thought it tactless, if not downright insulting, when he got a Christmas card of thanks from a local bootlegger, saying: “At the close of another year we realise how important your friendship and goodwill have been to our success.” His deputies called the phone number on the holly-trimmed card, discussed prices and made appointments. In due course the bootlegger’s Christmas spirits went down the drain as the police booked him. The bootlegger discovered that some frivolous —or dissatisfied —client had readdressed his Christmas greeting to the sheriff.
