St. John’s (Wanganui) Too Good For Matanui In Tennis Match

The Matanui Tennis Club did not fare too well in the friendly interclub match against St. John's (Wanganui) at Mafton on Saturday, winning only eight sets. 108 games, to St. John's 24 sets 174 games. FRIENDLY BOWLING MATCHES PLAYED IN MARTON

Ownig to th# uncertainty of the weather and the fact that several players were away for the day, the first round of the full rinks competition to have been played on the Marton bowling green on Saturday afternoon was postponed and only friendly games were played. Chapman, Robinson 15; Stratford, Mclndoe, Charlton, Atkinson 20, beat Mudgway, Brown, Smith, Kilpatrick 12; Whale, Head, Finnimore, Brabyn 16, lost to Clark, Scott. Morgan, Gorrie 20; Gibson, Williams, Hutton 21, lost to Morgan jun., McDonald, Thompson 23; Mitchell, Lourie, Barton 16, lost to Smart. Baines, Hunter 29.

TABLE TENNIS SEASON ENDS WITH DOUBLES TOURNEY

The Rangitikei Table Tennis Association concluded a very successful season with a handicap doubles tournament in the Marton Victory nail on Friday night. A total of 108 players, representing Lutheran, St. Francis, Marton, Parewanui, Rata, Marton Junction and Tutaenui Clubs, participated. Winners of the A grade event were P. Cootes and Mrs. K. Crawford (Marlon) and Mr and Mrs. R. C. Ball (Marton) won the consolation. The B grade was won by O. Gieeson and R. Gritlin (St. Francis), the consolation prize going to Miss Kingt ano Mrs. Brown (t’arewanui).

The president of the association, Mr G. Hunter, in presenting te trophies, thanked the various clubs for ttfeir support during the past season - s competitions. He presented the shield to the Parewanui Club, winners of the B grade competition, and R. Stantiall's team from the Marton clubs, will receive a similar tropliy tor winning the A grade competition The evening concluded with the serving of supper under the capable* supervision oi Mis. G. Hunter. There will be no table tennis at Tutaenui tomorrow night, but those interested in a doubles tournament to be held on Tuesday, November 11, are asked to hand tliefr names to Mr. E. Oliver immediately. MARTON BAND MEMBERS FOR DOMINION CONTEST. Fifteen members from the Marton Municipal Brass Band have been nominated lor the various solo competitions at the next Dominion band contest to be held in Dunedin in February. The band will probably also enter trios and o.uartettes in their respective sections.

About 35 water colour pictures, the work of a Marton artist, Mr. Peter Moriarty, will be showing in the Lounge Tearooms, Marton, from today until Saturday, November 15. Most of the paintings are of local subjects and should be of general interest, particularly those whose interests lie in art work While Mr. Moriarty has exhibited his paintings privately, this Is the first time his exhibition has been shown to the Marton public. FOOTBALL CLUB BARN DANCE. Next Saturday night, the popular Marton Railway Football Club will hold a noveltv barn dance in the Railway Social Hall, and their efforts will

include all the “trimmings” of a barn dance. Prizes will bo awarded for the best costumes ana a dainty supper will be provided. The committee assures patrons that a real barn dance will give them plenty of fun next Saturday night. COMING ATTRACTIONS
