THE BIRTH RATE

"JTiIE birthrate still shows an upward tendency notwithstanding tlie unsatisfactory state of the housing problem. On the whole, however, the birthrate remains at a much lower level than in the decade 1880-1889 when it stood at .34.92 per 1000 of population excluding Maoris. There was a gradual decline up fo and including the decade 1920-1929 when it averaged 21.63. Tn the deeade 1930-39 it fell to 17.43 but this was in harmony with the previous trend and should not be exclusively attributed to the depression years of 19-30-33. The yearly rate in 1938 was 17.93, rising to 22.81 in 1941. The war affected adversely the population increase by births, but the delayed action of the Depression and the war have combined to offset the falling tendency in the birthrate. In 1945 the rate was 21.59, rising to 23.22 and 25.24. respectively, in the following years. In the March quarter of 1946 the birth-rate was 25.43 per 1000 of population rising to 27.84 in the first quarter of this vear.
