TAKANINI JUVENILES OUTSTANDING

TAULOCH BRILLIANT IN WELCOME STAKES (Special) Auckland, Oct. 15. Takanini trainer F. Smith had something oi a held day at Ellerslie last Saturday, Lor he won 'three of the main events for patrons of his stable. These included the Shorts Handicap with Majesty, who looks like being a first-class galloper this season, tne Mitchelson Cup with Balgowan, raced by Mr. W. S. Goosman, M.P., and the Welcome Stakes with Tauloch, who races in the same colours. In the last-named event bmith had three juveniles and they finished lirst, second and fourth,' earning £llOO. As Balgowan’s win in the Mitchelson Cup was worth £l5OO and a gold cup valued at £5O, and Majesty earned £7OO, the four placings were worth £3300 in stake-money. The Smith representative in the Great Northern Guineas, Niloch, did not fulfil his engagement. The feat ot Smith in filling three of the first four placings in the Welcome Stakes is proof that the recent claim that, he is going to play a leading role in the proauction of class two-year-olds, had a very solid foundation. Though victory in the Welcome Stakes went to a really good colt in fauloch, one must, spare a word of praise tor Regality, who was having nis lirst start and only went under by the narrowest of margins. Coonbridge, the third Smith representative, had refused to go near the tapes at Te Aroha a week earlier, but tins time he began well. He showed a lot of pace and led into the straight from High Power, Regality, Lady Brazen and Lady Cometary, with Tauloch next and about seven lengths behind the leader. At the distance Regality hit the front and drew clear, looking” all over a winner. Tauloch commenced his run as soon as they straightened up and he had to be taken round the leading division. At ihe distance he began to bore out and lost a little ground before being sent alter his stablemate, but over the last i’.all-l'urlong he fairly flew to catch Regality right on the post. It was an outstanding performance on the part of the winner. A tine black colt by Baiioch from Taupiri, he cost 1050 guineas as a yearling and has already returned £1315 in stakes Lor a third and two firsts. Regality is a line big brown colt, not unlike Majesty at the same age. Finis from Kama, and was purchased for 2100 guineas at the yearling sales last January. He ran a ;,;eat race for a lirst up. Craftsman, who went a fair race for third, is the 1350 guineas Salmagundi—-Crossques-tion colt who ran second lirst time out al Te Aroha a week earlier, and on Saturday just headed Coonbridge oil. Behind the latter finished High Power, Gay Coronach, Lady Vennachar, Lady Brazen and Lady Cometary. The forward showing made by the younger horses from Smith’s quarters naturally draws attention to two others he has yet to produce, and they are reported to be good also. This pair, Vice-Chancellor and Jolly Lass, were accepted for in the Musket Slakes at Ellerslie this week ana so they may appear shortly. Vice-Chan-cellor (a 2700-guinea colt) is a brou-n by Foxbridge from Hest, and Jolly L::- - (a 1700-guinoa filly) is a bay by Neptune from Jolly. The filly is reported to have a lot of pace.
