WELLESLEY STAKES FIELD WILL BE A LARGE ONE

Juveniles' Classic at Trentham Ranks As An Early Test

Providing' the first major clash of two-year-old form, the Wellesley Stakes, to be run at Trent ham on Saturday, should attract most of the leading juveniles in commission, though the absence of the. Auckland contingent will leave, in doubt, for the present at any rate, the question of supremacy among this season’s youngsters. That, may not be decided till later on, one of the events generally accepted as decisive being the Croat Northern Foal Stakes at the Ellerslie summer meeting.

ern Foal Stakes at the Ellerslie f When forfeits were taken for the Wellesley Stakes there were 29 youngsters left in. but several defections may be expected before the field lines up for the five-

furlong journey. But with more than twenty two-year-olds to be lined up. the. starter is going to have a problem. Still, the stake of £1750 is an attractive one. and when owners pay four-figure sums for yearlings they may be expected to take advantage of every opportunity to secure au early return for their outlay. Juvenile "classics” which have already been decided include the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes, the Hastings Stakes and the D.J.C. McLean Stakes, and it is pleasing to find that, though the Ellerslie winner Talloeh not engaged, Bolivar (Hastings Stakes) and Magical (McLean Stakes) will be on hand. Bolivar is a black colt by Beaulivrp from Consummation, his dam being a half-sister to Korero, and Magical i q a black gelding by Balloch from Black Cat. Stellar, who won the Wanganui Debutant and the Carterton Juvenile Stakes, is a dual winner engaged, a fact which will add to the interest in her appearance. Regal Simon, a ba-v gelding by Revelation from Lone Flier, therefore fully related to Blue Simon and Black Simon, won the Juvenile Handicap at Marton, and Air Belle, a filly by Airway, won the second division of the two-year-olds’ race at Masterton last Saturday. W. J. Broughton rode both these winners, and it will be interesting to note which he elects to ride at Trentham. In addition to these winners, there are several youngster s who have filled placing?, including Jacquinot Bay. Trident and Sonia, as well as several likely improvers, but the form of two-year-olds is generally reliable, and backers are likely to support youngsters which have already won. The Wellesley Stakes appears certain to provide an excellent test for the juveniles.
