BEATEN BY HORNABROOK

CASEY, SILK, TUNNELL ARE OTHER THREE STILL IN

The feature of yesterdays play in the Wanganui open provincial golf championship at Belmont was the defeat of last years winner, A. R. Kitto, by J. P. Hornabrook (Wellington) in the quarter-finals, 2 and 1 After leading the qualifying rounds, Kitto failed to play up to form in yesterdays match play, whereas Hornabrook displayed some of his old form, which helped him win the New Zealand title before the war. Kitto played well until the 13th, when he started to pack up, and for the remaining holes he lost many chances. B. M Silk had two comfortable wins to go through to the semi-finals today, when he will play J. B. Tunnell (Wanganui). T. Cascv (Wanganui) beat the youthful Cutfield and will meet Hornabrook in the semi-finals. Both games are expected to attract keen interest as Tunnell and Casey have been playing good golf. The bogey competition played during the morning was won by C. L. Cutfield, 6up, V. B. Haworth being second with 2 up and A. R. Kitto third with 1 up. A Stableford played during the afternoon was won by K. S. Glendinning, 38. T. Casey, L. H. Parkes and L. Wilson were 37, and K. Lockett was 35. B. M. Silk had a comfortable win against I. Manley in the first round. -Silk failed to reach the form of the first day when he played excellent golf, especially in the morning round when he was at the top of his form. In the second round, Silk met W. E. Jones, who he beat 3 and 1. He was 3 up at the turn. Silk was playing steady golf but was never extended although Jones’ play was good. Silk had the advantage off the tee and played much better than he did in the morning. His round was 71. Playing against H. S. Budd (Masterton) in the first round of the open championship, A. R. Kitto w*ent out in 38 to be square at the turn. Kitto won the 10th. and 11th. and lost the next to be 1 up. He won the next three in a row to win the match 4 and 3. Kitto again was playing steady golf. Hornabrook played a much steadier game in the first round against G. P. Roberts, who contested the final unsuccessfully last year against A. IL Kitto. Hornabrook went out in 36 and was one under fours for the return. Roberts’ putting let him down badly at a crucial stage of the game. Hornabrook’s putting was more consistent than in the qualifying rounds when he did not display his best form. The highlight of the afternoon round was the match between J. P. Hornabrook and A. R. Kitto, which was won by the former 2 and 1. Hornabrook displayed some of the form which won him the New Zealand open championship on two occasions in the years before the war. His putting was weak in the qualifying rounds but in yesterday’s match he gave an exhibition of putting wfiich was first class. A feature of his game was his splendid seconds. On one occasion his second landed him two feet from the pin for an eagle three. His tee shots were strong and accurate. The game was toughly fought and there was little between the players, Hornabrook’s putting no doubt helping him out of several tough spots. KITTO STARTS WELL Kitto was playing a steady game until the 13th., when he made a bad shot and from there on his play seemed to deteriorate. He was not getting distance with his seconds and his putting wds lacking confidence. Hornabrook won the first with an eagle three to Kitto’s four. The next two were halved in par figures, Kitto winning the fourth in par to square the match. The next was halved in birdie 3’s, Hornabrook winning the sixth to be 1 up. The next two were halved in par figures. For the first . nine holes Hornabrook’s card read: 34454454 4—37. Kitto was two strokes better and his card was: 4 4 4 4 3 5 3 4 4—35. Square at the turn, the 10th. was halved in par figures. Hornabrook lost Long lorn to be 1 down for the first time. Hornabrook had a birdie two at the short 12th. to square the game. Alma was halved in s’s after both had gone through to the back of the green and chipped badly. Kitto sliced his tee shot at Encampment and Hornabrook took the hole with a beautiful eagle three, his second stopping about two feet from the pin. Hornabrook placed his tee shot out of bounds at French Pass but recovered to halve. Hornabrook won the 16th. in par figures to be dormie two. The 17th. was halved in par figures, Hornabrook winning two and one.

Leo Whetton and K. S. Glendinning (Palmerston North) had a hardfought game which ended on the 19th. with Whetton the winner, who was 3 up at the 10th. Glendinning made up the leeway and w’as leading 1 up as they hit off from the 18th. tee. Whetton took this hole with excellent putting and went on to win the game at the next. C. L. Cutfield, the youthful Wanganui player, who played some fine golf on the first day, returning the second best card of the second qualifying round, was on form again in the first round of the championship when he beat the veteran J. L. Black (Hutt), 3 and 2. Cutfield played excellent golf after a shaky start and returned a card of 71, which read: Out, 56333444 4—36. In, 34 3 4 5 4 4 4 4—35.

Cutfield was not .good enough for T. Casey, who beat him 5 and 4 in the second round. Casey’s golf was just too good for the young player. Casey's round was 72.
