UNNECESSARY TRAVEL ABROAD TO BE CUT IN AUSTRALIA

Recd. 8 p.m. Canberra, Oct. 1 An assurance that unnecessary travel abroad on Government business would be curtailed as much as possible, was given in the House of Representatives today by the Prime Minister (Mr. Chifley). He told members that he would confer with the Minister of Labour (Mr. Holloway) concerning delegations to the Internation Labour Organisation Conference, which had been financed by the Government. Mr. Chifley strongly defended the practice of wives accompanying Ministers abroad. “There was a time when this side of the House was accused by the Opposition and press as being a party which had no knowledge of the world, as the members had never been outside New South Wales,” he concluded. Mr. Harrison: Is that why Mr. Daly was away live months? Mr. Chifley: Mr. Daly can speak for himself in due course.
