BOXING NOTES
(BY TOM SOUTER.)
Voted the hardest hitting flyweight seen in action at the amateur championships held at Christchurch. Clive Head, of Wanganui, had no difficulty in collecting the New Zealand title. He triumphed in a very strong class in ihi s section, winning all his fights well. Encouraging feature of his exhibition was the manner in which he used both hands with telling effect. Bernie Coughlin was beaten by the narrowest of margins, the decision going to Stanley, of Auckland, who was the aggressor in the final stages of the bout, Coughlin thus lost his title but a significant fact is that whereas he weighed in on the first night at lOst. 4!bs., he entered the ring for the final at. 9.13.
Dr. J. R. J. Moore (Wanganui) impressed al the championships as a very capable referee. He disqualified one boxer smartly after an initial warning, and also stopped one bout when a contestant was helpless on the ropes. In the latter instance the spectators took exception at first to what no doubt, they considered a hasty action, but when the boxer suddenly collapsed they changed their opinion and voiced appreciation of the genial doctor’s sound judgement. MONDAY'S BOUTS. Sole selector for the local association. Mr. H. Chalney, has drawn up an attractive programme for Monday night's tourney. Two star bouts of the evening will lx a special sixrounder between B. Coughlin of Wanganui and Jones, of Rongotea, and a four-rounder between Pat Dwyer, of Blenheim and the Manawatu champion. Fred Hubbard. Phil Adams, local fighter, will meet. Fitzwater, of Hawke's Bay in a preliminary.
