LONDON LORD MAYOR
SIR F. WELLS SELECTED London, Sept. 29. Sir Frederick Wells has been elected Lord Mayor of London. He will receive the ’seals of office at the Lord Mayor’s Show on November 9.. Str Frederick Wells spent most of his life in Britain, but ha s made several trips to the Dominions, where he has business interests.
The Lord Chancellor has announced that in view’ of the present conditions it would be inappropriate to hold the annual breakfast reception for the new Lord Mayor.
Th e Chancellor’s breakfast to the incoming Lord Mayor was discontinued during the war, but was revived last year. The special service Held before the induction of the Lord Mayor will take place at Westminster Abbey on October 13. Recently masters and prime-wardens of the 12 senior and 67 lesser livery companies (City guilds of London) have been telling their liverymen whom to elect Lord Mayor of London. In theory, the next below the chair is elected by a show of hands. In fact, the heads of the companies decide in advance which of the eligible aidermen who have served their year a.» sheriff they will have. Sir Frederick Wells, w’ho lias been chosed for 194748, is the son of a wealthy City merl chant. He has spent all his life in London, and was educated at the City of London College. He made most of his money out of chemical products, and is a member of more City companies than any other candidate i Carmen's. Painters’ and Stainers’, and Founders. He is also a member of four clubs—the Carlton, the City Livery. Constitutional, and Thatched House. At 63 he plays a very good round of golf.
