Richard Straus to Conduct British Orchestra in His Own Works

(N.Z.P.A. —Special—Copyright.) Recd. 6 p.m. London, Oct. 1 The famous German composer and former director of the Vienna State Opera, Richard Strauss, arrives in London on Saturday to conduct the Philharmonic Orchestra in a recital of his own works, which will be given on October 19.

Strauss, who is aged 83, has been living in Switzerland since 1942. Sir Thomas Beecham, who arranged the visit, persuaded the Bank of England to allow to take £lOOO out of Britain. It is estimated that more than £lOO,OOO in royalties accumulated to the composer’s credit in Britain during the war years. At present he is still classed as an enemy alien, and cannot touch this money.

Among the Strauss works to be played during his London visit is the phantasy “Woman Without Eye Shadow,” which has never been played before.
