TAIHAPE PREPARATIONS FOR TRANSIT HOUSING BOROUGH COUNCIL ACTIVITY

<O-C.) Taihape. Oct. 1. Although there is still no sign of a start bein£ made with the preparation of the site purchased last year by the Housing Department in taihape for over 40 State houses, the difficult housing situation in the town is a little improved by the recent completion of several State dwellings In other streets. The Borough Council has decide! to provide transit housing, having secured six dormitory’ type huts from Waiouru Camp after consultations with Mr. P. Kearins, M.P. fo; Waimarino. Tenders have been calle! for the erection of these dwellings, plans for which will be drawn up by an architect. Eally last week a bulldozer contractor prepared the site opposite the county council office to receive four transit houses, and also levelled off a section at the corner of Ruru Road and Kaka Road for another. The former section has a usable length of about 100 yards and a depth of a chain. Mr. Kearins made it clear that tenants of these transit houses would have first claim on State houses as they became available. There is also considerable activity in renovation and repair of business premises, the me st comprehensive undertaking being the complete rebuilding of the lower floor of Abraham and Williams’ building in Hautapu Street and the re-decorating of the upper rooms. This work is now nearing completion and will bring the building into conformity with adjoining premises.
