Australia Trying to Make N.Z. A "Satellite"
Opposition Member’s Criticism
(N.Z.P.A.—Reuter—Copyright.) Recd. 9.40 p.m. Canberra, Oct. 1. Australian expenditure on diplomatic representation in Chile, Brazil and Russia was scathingly criticised by the Deputy Country Party leader (Mr. McEwen) in the House of Representatives today. H e declared that a proportion of this money was being spent solely to build up the international status of Dr. Evatt. “We are spending £5OO a week in Chile and £6OO in Brazil, while we are telling war widows we can give them only 3s a week,” he declared. He also attacked the Australian link up with New Zealand, saying that it had had the effect of having New Zealand re-echo tomorrow in external affairs what Australia said today. "Australia has not only established closer relations with New Zealand, but has gone further than that, and appears to be trying to convert her into a minor satellite of the Australian nation,” he charged. “Whenever Dr. Evatt speaks in the world councils it is noticeable that his views are echoed by the New Zealand representative.”
