BIG MURDER TRIAL AT NUREMBERG
Nuremberg, Sept. 29. Th e world’s greatest murder trial opened today, when 21 leaders ot German groups known as “Himmler’s murder squads’’ appeared before a war crimes court charged with methodically murdering about one million Jews, Communists, and other people of western Russia and the Baltic States. Two other defendants were too ill to attend. The chief United States prosecutor, Mr. Benjamin Ferencz, said that about 3000 members of the groups between them averaged 1350 murders a day, seven days a week, for over 100 weeks. “Reports which these groups submitted,” he said, “will show that the slaughter was dictated not by military necessity but by the supreme perversion of thought—the Nazi theory of the master race.”
