LOCAL ELECTIONS

PREPARATIONS FOR THE WANGANUI POLL

With local body elections less than seven weeks away (November 19), preparations are well in hand. The main Wanganui City roll closed on July 31, with a record number of names—l7,l44. A supplementary roll is now in course of preparation, and this will close on Wednesday, October 22. With the record number of names on the main roll it is expected that the number of names on the supplementary roll will be well under the figure of 4420, which was recorded in 1944. City voters will have five issues to deal with on election day. These will be the election of a Mayor, 12 City Councillors, six city representatives on the Wanganui Harbour Board, five on the Wanganui Hospital Board, and four on the Wanganui-Rangitikei Electric-power Board. Nominations will close on Wednesday. October 29. The Wanganui returning officer (Mr. C. R. White) stated yesterday that there still existed about 50 staff vacancies to be filled for election day. With a view to expediting the results extra staff will be placed at some of the larger booths, and in the main booth, which will be the Drill Hall. A number of the main rolls, together with some enrolment forms, have been placed in business premises in both the city and suburbs.
