Magistrate Says Double Parking An Annoying Offence

“This double parking in the city streets is one of the most annoying offences you could possibly meet with,’’ said Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, yesterday, when Mervyn Mark O’Connor was charged with a breach of the Traffic Regulations, 1936, in that his heavy motor-vehicle was doublebanked in Ridgway Street. Inspector H. E. Tipper prosecuted on behalf of the City Council, a fine of £l, costs 12s, being imposed. Inspector E. Hamling said that ehe truck was parked outside a taxi stand in Ridgway Street for. more than 20 minutes and interfered with traffic. The magistrate said that defendant had written to the Court stating that there was no parking space for vehicles for at least two blocks away, and that he had to jjirk his lorry while delivering goods to an hotel. He was away in 16 minutes.

Inspector Tipper said the lorry driver was not an operator or a licensed carrier. “We do not penalise a man if he is carrying goods under a licence,” Inspector Tipper added. Dora Maud Robertson, charged with driving a motor-car at a greater speed than 30 miles an hour, was fined £l, costs 10s. Inspector Hamling said that defendant drove along Heads Road at a speed of between 40 and 45 miles an hour.
