NGA TOA BEAT ST. MARY’S IN KNOCKOUT FINAL CLOSELY CONTESTED GAME In a closely congested final, Nga I Toa boat. St. Mary’sthe knock-out competition held onrSaturday under the control of the Wanganui Women's Basketball Association. The final score favoured Nga Tda by 16 goals to 15. College A, in the senior B grade, played consistently good basketball to win their section and earned the right to be matched against. Hawera October 4 at Wanganui. College have improved considerably this season. Technical A2. who played one short, won the junior grade from St. Mary’s IC by one goal, the score being 7-6 in their favour. The third-grade went to Garments B, who have maintained a high standard of play in the final by 16 goals to .12 after a keenly-con-tested game refereed by Mrs. Brown. Entries so far received for visitors’ day total ten outside teams. Further entries are expected from Levin and other districts. The following local teams have been selected to play the visitors, Wanganui teams being mentioned first: Garments B v. Otaki Textile B, Zemba v. Ashurst, Hinemoa v. Eltham, College A v. Hawera, Star v. Otaki Textile A, T.O.G. v. United New Plymouth, Nga Toa v. Y.W.C.A., New Plymouth, St. Mary’s A v. Hawera High School Old Girls. Further local teams will be matched as more entries arrive. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP The final game of the season will be played this coming Saturday between Nga Toa and T.O.G. for the senior championship. Nga Toa are so far unbeaten this season and should be able to defeat the challengers. T.0.G., however, are a hard team to defeat and with J. McFarland and L. Breed in the forward third combining perfectly’ with N. Couchman, Nga Toa will need to watch every move if they are 10 win. Mr. N. Hansen, of Wellington. has been appointed to referee this game. Mr. J. Buddin, of Wellington, will also be officiating at the tournament on Saturday. New Zealand referees for Wanganui on Saturday are iMiss Chapman-Cohen (Levin), Messrs. N. Hansen and J. Buddin (Wellington) and Mr. Haberfield (Wanganui). There is also a possibility of Taranaki being represented by Mrs. Knuckey. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES The presentation of trophies will take place at the association’s annual dance. All captains of teams holding trophies are requested to hand them in to the secretary, Mrs. Schnack, 36 Halswell Street, as soon as possible. Winners of all championships and tournament fixtures will be published next week.
