MARTON PAYS TRIBUTE TO WORTHY CITIZEN

LENGTHY CORTEGE AT MR. A. WAY’S FUNERAL

Marton community, supported by representatives of various public bodies throughout the district and further afield, united yesterday in paying a final tribute to the late Mr. Arthur Way, whose death occurred on Sunday. The large congregation which filled St. Stephen’s Church to overflowing, the lengthy cortege which followed to the graveside at. St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Mount View, and the wealth of floral emblems all testified to the respect, esteem and affection which Mr. Way had won during his 55 years’ residence in Marton. Services at the church and a.t the graveside were conducted by Canon H. Watson, of Marton. In tribute to Mr. Way’s association for over half a century with the Ancient Order of Foresters, of which in latter years he had been a trustee, the last rites of the order were recited at the graveside by Wellington District Chief Ranger S. R. McCallum. Chief mourners were Mr. Way’s two surviving sons, Jack (Castlecliff) and Percy (Otorohanga), and his only surviving brother, Mr. Harry Way, o' New Plymouth.

Pall-bearers at the church were Messrs A. H. Marshall and L. K. McBeth (Marton Jockey Club), J. Caithness and T. E. Barton (N.Z. National Party), and R. L. Penn and R. H. Turnbull (Marton Division St. John Ambulance). The casket was carried to the graveside by Messrs F. McLean and K. McK. Duncan (Rangitikei Hunt Club), E. H. Simpson and A. S. Coleman (Marton A. and P. Association), and G. W. Grey and F. A. Tiling (Court Little John, A.0.F.). GUARD OF HONOUR At the church members of the St. John Ambulance (Marton Division) and the Nursing Division formed a guard of honour, and at the entrance to the burial ground a guard of honour was formed by St. John Ambulance members.

Among the hundreds who had assembled to pay tribute to the memory of one whose life had been spent in' widespread service to the community were the Mayor of Marton (Mr. F. Purnell), Mr E. B. Gordon, M.P., Messrs J. R. L. Stanford and R. J. McDonald (N.Z. Racing Conference), P. A. O’Neill, F. F. Newman, S. J. Sievers and A. Macnab (Wanganui Jockey Club), J. Johnston and J. C. Duncan (Rangitikei Hunt Club), J. Caithness (Rangitikei Electorate llitional Party), T. E. Barton (Marton branch . National Party), K. W. Dalrymple (Rangitikei County Council), A. S. Coleman (Wanganui Hospital Board), N. V. Rix-Trott (Rangitikei Cricket Association), B. Drew .Marton Boxing Association), L. Mcßeth (Rangitikei Rugby Union), C. W. FLORAL TRIBUTES Among the many beautiful floral tributes, numbering nearly 250, for the conveyance of which from church to graveside two lorries were required, were wreaths from the following public bodies and organisations:— The Mayor, councillors and burgesses of Marton.
